An Antarctica expedition cruise is not one standard product. Two sailings with similar dates and prices can feel completely different because of the route, passenger count, expedition team, cabin, included activities and the way shore operations are organized.
The best starting point is not “Which operator has the biggest discount?” It is “What experience do I want, and which ship can deliver it?”
Match the route to the experience
The Antarctic Peninsula is the classic first expedition: dramatic ice, penguin colonies, Zodiac cruising and weather-dependent landings. Longer itineraries may add the Antarctic Circle, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia or the Weddell Sea.

Every Antarctic itinerary is an expedition plan, not a guaranteed port schedule. Weather, sea and ice conditions determine the final daily program.
Ship size changes the rhythm ashore
IAATO groups vessels by passenger capacity. Traditional expedition ships carrying 13–200 passengers and mid-size ships carrying 201–500 may make landings. Vessels carrying more than 500 passengers are cruise-only and do not make Antarctic landings. General visitor guidance also limits most landings to a maximum of 100 passengers ashore at one time.
- Ask for the operating passenger count—not only the ship’s maximum capacity.
- Ask how guests rotate between shore landings and Zodiac cruises.
- Compare mudroom access, Zodiac loading, observation decks and expedition staffing.
Compare the complete trip, not the cabin headline
A realistic comparison includes the voyage, mandatory hotel nights, charter flights, transfers, expedition gear, insurance, gratuities, optional activities and international air. A lower cabin price can become a higher total trip cost once exclusions are added.

- Check deposit, final-payment and cancellation terms before paying.
- Confirm medical-form and evacuation-insurance requirements.
Choose the cabin for real expedition life
A balcony can be wonderful, but cabin location, motion, storage, bathroom layout and distance to the mudroom may matter more. Solo travelers should compare a dedicated solo cabin, a roommate-match program and paying a single supplement.
The best cabin is the one that fits your comfort, sleep, mobility and budget—not automatically the highest category.
